Fewer subscriptions, more tools of your own. How about two useful finds for this week?
While everyone argues about which model is smarter, something else is quietly happening: more and more of the software you pay for every month has a free open-source twin. The only question is how to find it quickly.
There’s a catalogue that solves this: OpenAlternative. Type in any paid tool (Notion, Slack, Figma, Zapier) and you get open-source replacements, complete with their GitHub star counts, licences and an explanation of how each one differs from the original. No freemium junk, just projects that are genuinely open source and that you can host yourself.
The catalogue itself is open source too (it was built by developer Piotr Kulpinski), so it’s easier to trust than yet another “top 10 tools” list from a site that lives off affiliate links.
Why it matters: in a world where code gets written in seconds, the real price you pay is being dependent on someone else’s subscription. And this is your map of the exits.
