What Claude in Excel can really do: 5 spreadsheet use cases

Forget spreadsheet drudgery: what can Claude in Excel actually do? 🚀

We’re used to Excel being a powerful but often complicated tool that requires you to know hundreds of functions and formulas. But when a powerful language (that is, text-based) intelligence like Claude joins the game, the rules change.

Claude in Excel (the Claude model integrated directly into the spreadsheet environment) turns working with data from tedious copy-pasting into an intelligent conversation.

What can it do, and how does it change the way you work? 👇

🤖 1. Generating complex formulas in plain language. No more googling how =INDEX(MATCH) or tricky nested IFs work.

You write: “Claude, calculate the average order value, but only for customers from Kyiv who bought something at the weekend.”

What Claude does: it generates the correct =AVERAGEIFS(...) formula and inserts it into the cell.

🧹 2. Smart data cleaning and normalisation. Got a CRM export where the names and phone numbers are all over the place?

You write: “Standardise this column to one format: First name Surname, both starting with a capital letter.”

What Claude does: it works through thousands of rows, fixing mistakes, removing extra spaces and formatting the text.

📊 3. Text analysis and categorisation (an AI analyst). Got a column with a thousand written customer reviews? That used to be impossible to quantify.

You ask Claude: “Analyse the review in cell A2 and write its sentiment (positive/negative/neutral) in B2, and the main reason for dissatisfaction, if there is one, in C2.”

What Claude does: it fills the neighbouring columns with structured data based on the text it has read.

📝 4. Data extraction

The task: you’ve got the text of an email dumped into a single cell: “Hi, my name is Oleksii, my number is 050-111-22-33, order #5432.”

What Claude does: it automatically splits the name, phone number and order number into separate columns.

🧠 5. Explaining other people’s spreadsheets. Opened a colleague’s file only to find a three-line formula that fills you with dread?

What Claude does: it analyses the formula and explains in plain language exactly what it calculates and where it gets its data from.

The bottom line: Claude in Excel turns spreadsheets from a “calculator” into a tool that understands context. This lets analysts and managers spend their time drawing conclusions from data rather than wrestling with processing it.
